The Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) has refuted claims that members of the security forces have been deployed in rural areas to intimidate villagers.

The ZDF said they have no direct role in the upcoming harmonised elections and will only play a supporting role where necessary.

Addressing a media briefing at the Defence House today, ZDF Director Public Relations Colonel Overson Mugwisi said the security forces support the ZRP in their role of maintaining law and order in the country before, during and after the elections.

He said the ZDF is also ready to assist the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) with transport where necessary.

Of late there have been some allegations that the ZDF is participating in political campaigns and Colonel Mugwisi said if there are serving members of the ZDF who are participating in the ongoing political campaigns, they are doing so illegally.

Troops that have been deployed include those undertaking various command projects, border control operations in support of the ZRP and in some national parks in support of the park rangers.
