MASVINGO – The MDC says it is yet to receive full reports on the skirmishes that rocked the party during its Masvingo Urban internal elections last week before it can carry out investigations.

The elections were marked by violence and saw one person hospitalised as factions belonging to Masvingo provincial heavyweights Tongai Matutu and James Gumbi were involved in running battles.

However, the MDC national organising secretary Amos Chibaya said the national leadership was yet to receive complete communication on what transpired on the day before it took appropriate action.

“Regarding what transpired in Masvingo, we are still receiving reports from all teams we deployed in Masvingo,” he said.

“Once we receive the reports, we are going to have a meeting as organising (department) and will come up with the way forward, then we will inform you.

“The MDC is a Party of Excellence and violence is not part of our culture.”

The disturbances took place at the MDC Masvingo provincial offices in Rhodhen. However, efforts to get a comment from the police on whether they were investigating the disturbances were unsuccessful.

The main opposition party is in the process of restructuring its structures in Masvingo after MDC President Nelson Chamisa last month dissolved the provincial structure and other districts, accusing them of incompetence and insubordination.

In the 2018 elections, the party only managed to win the Masvingo Urban seat out of 26 parliamentary constituencies in Masvingo province. – Newzim
