The European Union Election Observer Mission (EUEOM) has disowned a press statement which is circulating and is dated 20 July.

The statement in question alludes to the alleged affair between Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) Justice Priscilla Chigumba and Minister of Mines Winston Chitando and the conflict of interest as a result of the alleged affair. In dismissing the statement, the EUEOM said,

Fake Press Release: please be advised that the so-called “press release” dated 20 July is fake. The EUEOM did not issue this paper. All press releases by the EUEOM can be found on the website:

The purported statement reads,

Harare 20 July 2018: The Zimbabwe’s 2018 elections are a critical test of its reforms. The presence of the European Union observers demonstrates the union’s commitment to the conduct of peaceful, inclusive, transparent and credible elections.

While there is a commitment from the Zimbabwe Government to meet these objectives we wish to note with concerns some issues highlighted by the opposition party and other civic society groups. These concerns include issues of the printing of the ballot paper and the more recent revelations of potential conflicts of interest from the elections commissions. It was our view that these concerns should be addressed to satisfactory standards ahead of the elections.
