Mugabe storm into ITF Pro F4 doubles final

Kampala, Uganda – Uganda’s top player Duncan Mugabe and Anton Chekhov from Russia have stormed the finals of the men’s doubles at the on-going Uganda ITF Pro Futures 4 at Lugogo Tennis Club.

Mugabe and his Russian partner where in good form upsetting the top seeds Jordi Munoz Abreu (Venenzuela) and David Perez Sanz (Spain) 7-6, 6-3 on Thursday.

” It is a good feeling that we shall be in a finals of an ITF event,” Mugabe told URN after the game that lasted 1hr16min. On Wednesday Mugabe fell out in the round of 16 in the men’s singles to Italy’s Marco Miceli.

Mugabe and his partner Chekhov will now battle the Kenyan pair of Ismael Changawa Ruwa Mzai and Ibrahim Kibet Yego in the doubles final on Friday afternoon. The Kenyan outsmarted the pair of Tyler Lu (USA) and Goran Markovic (Serbia) 6-3, 6-0 in the second semi final match.

In the men’s singles top seed Ivan Nedelko from Russia continued to prove a point when he stopped Marco Micelli 6-1, 6-1 at the quarter final level. Nedelko will now battle Goran Markovic at the semi final stage after the Serbian eliminated Lance-Pierre Du Toit (South Africa) 6-7, 6-4, 6-3.

USA’s Tyler Lu had to be in good form to defeat Kunal Anand (India) 6-4, 6-7, 7-5 in another quarter final match. Lu will now face the tournament’s seed 2 David Perez Sanz (Spain) in the second semi final match on Friday.

Uganda has managed to host four ITF Pro Futures events after the world international body lifted the suspension early this year when Uganda Tennis Association (UTA) cleared an accumulated affiliation fees of about 74 million shillings.
