The Gunners sacked the Spaniard a one year ago but he’s turning the Yellow Submarine into title contenders in Spain.

Unai Emery may not have made a success of his time at Arsenal but his start to life at Villarreal has been nothing short of sublime.

The Spanish boss lost 19 of his 78 games in North London but has only been beaten once in charge at his new club, in 12 games. The Yellow Submarine, as they are fondly known, started the campaign with back-to-back wins before a disappointing 4-0 defeat against Barcelona.

But since then they have bounced back remarkably putting together a nine-game unbeaten run with Sunday’s 3-1 triumph over Getafe lifting to them to the summit of Spain’s top-flight.

It may only be for a few hours, with Real Madrid taking on Valencia at 8pm and a win at La Mestalla would move them one point ahead of Villarreal.

That would then set up a blockbuster clash on November 21 when La Liga resumes following the international break as Villarreal welcome Los Blancos to El Madrigal.

One Arsenal fan said, one year on from his sacking: “Unai Emery having the time of his life.”
