Mnangagwa mourns victims of rally blast

HARARE, (Xinhua) — Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Tuesday sent a message of condolences following the death of two security officers following a rally blast in Bulawayo Saturday.

The two succumbed to injuries on Monday after the blast which injured 47 others. Mnangagwa escaped the blast unhurt but his deputy Kembo Mohadi was among the injured.

Mnangagwa said Tuesday the government will meet funeral and burial costs for the deceased officers.

“On behalf of the party, ZANU-PF, government and my family and on my own behalf, I tender my deepest condolences to families of the deceased officers. As I do so, I wish all those caught up in the terror attack speedy recovery,” Mnangagwa said.

He said the “cowardly terrorist attack” sought to subvert the will of the people of Zimbabwe by attempting to destabilize the ongoing electoral program.

Zimbabwe will hold general elections on July 30 and Mnangagwa has committed to holding peaceful, free and fair elections.

The polls will be held in the presence of Western observers for the first time in 16 years after Mnangagwa’s government extended an invitation to them.

Police are offering a substantial reward to anyone with information that may help with the investigations in to the blast.
