HARARE – Dramatic pictures have emerged showing three mystery men apparently fiddling with a vehicle owned by Nelson Chamisa’s lawyer, Advocate Thabani Mpofu.

A lawyer who was driving out of the basement car park of The Chambers in Harare took the images on Tuesday this week.

He became suspicious after leaving Mpofu’s office only to find a man in a blue work suit apparently performing some mechanical procedure on the front left side of Mpofu’s Land Rover Discovery.

The lawyer, who shared the images with ZimLive but wished to remain anonymous, said his first instinct was to take a picture.

“I drove round and came back a second time. Now I could clearly see three men doing something to the car, I can’t be sure what,” the lawyer said.

The incident, coming after Mpofu survived a car crash in a different vehicle on June 15 last month, will spark serious security concerns among lawyers representing the opposition and human rights campaigners who have been reporting increased state repression and impunity.

Mpofu told ZimLive he had checked with Old Mutual, the owners of the building, and had been informed that there were no workmen hired to work in the building on that day.

His vehicle which crashed in Muzarabani, Mashonaland Central, is still being examined, and the Land Rover has also been turned over to experts for examination.

Mpofu did not wish to comment further.

In May, journalist and documentary maker Zenzele Ndebele – a prominent critic of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government – told of his terror after his vehicle’s front left wheel nuts came clean off while driving from Matopo in Matabeleland South. He was unhurt in the incident.
