A WARRANT has been issued for the arrest of a man who was spared jail for stealing his girlfriend’s phone as it is thought he has gone home to his wife and children in Africa.

Tashinga Pswarayi was ordered to do 160 hours of unpaid work and pay £3,000 when he was put on a suspended sentence during the summer.

But the 38-year-old, of Scorhill Lane, East Wichel, failed to turn up for three appointments with the probation service earlier this month.

Now it is believed he has failed to come back from Zimbabwe where he has a wife and four children, Swindon Crown Court was told.

Simon Foster, prosecuting, said Pswarayi was put on a six month jail term suspended for 18 months on Friday July 14.

As well as the unpaid work he was told to pay £2,800 towards the costs of the hearing at Isleworth Crown Court as well as £200 compensation.

“The sentencing court knew he was going to Zimbabwe on July 22 and would return on July 30,” Mr Foster said.

“The fact of the matter is he was sent letters saying he should attend on November 4, November 11 and November 18.

“He has apparently a wife and four children in Zimbabwe and a girlfriend who was the victim here. He has plainly not come back.”

Judge Robert Pawson issued a warrant without bail to bring him before the court to face the allegation of failing to comply with the terms of a suspended sentence.

Pswarayi was staying with his then girlfriend in the Hounslow area of London in October last year when he pinched her mobile phone.

When he was arrested he protested his innocence, saying he would take it to the highest court in the land, but was convicted. – Swindon Advertiser
