HARARE – The MDC Alliance has announced the death of its Kuwadzana MP Miriam Mushayi.

Mushayi died at a Harare hospital on Monday night – almost a week after she was taken ill after collapsing at the Harare Magistrates’ Court where she had gone in solidarity with the party’s deputy chairman Job Sikhala.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa said Mushayi’s death was “a huge blow upon previous other multiple blows.”

“It has been torrid and terrible. It never rains but it pours. Tragedies hunt in packs, move in droves. When sorrows come, they come not in single files but in battalions,” Chamisa wrote on Twitter while describing Mushayi as a “people’s leader.”

MDC Alliance treasurer general David Coltart described Mushayi as a “principled and loyal friend, a true patriot who fought a brave non-violent battle her whole adult life to bring democracy to Zimbabwe.”

“She will be sorely missed,” Coltart said.

She was an “amazing soul” an a “superwoman”, the MDC Alliance’s youth leader Obey Sithole tweeted.

“The sudden death of the indefatigable Hon Miriam Mushayi is a body blow to our movement. She was a warm, powerful and cheerful cadre. We have lost a gallant daughter of the struggle,” MDC Alliance deputy president Tendai Biti added.

Mushayi was a member of the MDC Alliance’s National Standing Committee.
