Opposition politician and leader of the Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) party Nelson Chamisa appears to have divided Zimbabweans following a post in which he seemed to mock ancestors and African spirituality.

Writing on social media, the CCC leader said,

When men tell you to consult the spirits of the dead and the spiritists who whisper and mutter, shouldn’t a people consult their God instead? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? Isaiah 8:19-20 Happy Sabbath beloved!

Chamisa was roundly criticized by some quarters for allegedly embracing Christianity and European beliefs at the expense of African spirituality.

Others accused Chamisa of failing to separate state and religion. They argued that a potential head of state should embrace all religions and belief systems without being partisan in his approach. They argued that he should not impose his own beliefs on everyone else and that he should differentiate between being a pastor and a president.

Others, however, applauded Nelson Chamisa for being a God-fearing leader. They argued that powerful leaders are anointed by God and rule according to his principles.

The issue has been receiving a lot of attention and engagement on social media. Below are some of the reactions by Zimbabweans online to Nelson Chamisa’s tweet on ancestors and African spiritualism.

@Cuttybeats

That’s how we prayed before Christianity came to Zimbabwe. Vadzimu is not Satan but the state we will be too when we die, and the living have us in their hearts. Souls do not die but Live on. Stay neutral on religion; you are a President to People of all Regions and beliefs.

Loyal to God, loyal to the country and loyal to the people. God first tinokunda

@zimbology

Dear @nelsonchamisa,

STOP insulting and mocking AFRICAN TRADITIONAL RELIGIONS. Africans never imposed their beliefs or culture on anyone. YOUR European Christianity was imposed upon Africans through rape, colonial genocide and theft. Who used the Myth of Ham to enslave Africans?

The first stop when we get to form the next govt is to re-dedicate our land to God. Along with this, we remove all altars to spiritualism from our land. Only then will God heal our land. He will then smite down our enemies before our eyes. That Mbuya Nehanda statue must go totally.

@SimbarasheKan

Sir, just a question
Are you a Pastor or a Politician?

My brother, as an aspiring leader of a secular Zimbabwe, there is no need to denigrate those who are of a different religion from yours. Religion is a choice guaranteed in the Constitution. Unwittingly, you are already alienating some of your potential voters. You can do better.
