Zimbabwean tobacco sales gross 611 million USD this year

HARARE, (Xinhua) — Zimbabwean farmers have earned 611.2 million U.S. dollars from at least 209.7 million kilograms of tobacco sold since the selling season opened in March, statistics from the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) show Wednesday.

The statistics released on day 64 of sale show that of the volume of tobacco sold so far, about 178.8 million kg were sold through the contract system while the remainder went under the hammer.

During the comparable period in 2017, about 161.9 million kg of tobacco worth 473 million dollars were sold at an average price of 2.92 dollars per kg.

In the last season, farmers in total earned over 600 million dollars from over 190 million kg of tobacco. Enditem
