MASVINGO – Residents of Mucheke Suburb in Masvingo have objected to the closure of Zimuto Road which by developers of the Simon Muzenda museum at a house where the former Vice President stayed in the 50s’ when he was a political activist for the liberation struggle.

Zimuto is the main road that runs from Masvingo’s main Mucheke rank into the museum area but the road is also the main accessory into the R Section of Mucheke. Friends of Joshua Nkomo who developed the museum closed off the road and pedestrians, cyclists have to go round the section to find access to their homes.

A petition to Masvingo City Council that has been signed by residents claims that safety has been compromised with a lot of muggings, robberies and assaults taking place as people take longer routes to their homes.

The residents also complained that some politicians were intimidating them when they try to complain against the closure of the road.

Rayban Sengwayo of The Friends of Joshua Nkomo said they closed off the road because artefacts were vandalised and used condoms were found at the place.

Town Clerk, Adolf Gusha said he had not yet seen the petition but will attend to it once he gets it.

Trust Mhaka who is leading a campaign against the closure of the road told The Mirror that the process of closing the road was unprocedural as the City Council did not call for objections to the development. He said a notice of the inteneded development should have been served on the the residents to allow for their objections. – Masvingo Mirror
