I hope the article is untrue - if the SA government has not yet seen & recognised how the Zim land reform process has resulted in plunging the country into abject poverty and famine, then they are truly blind - or perhaps just in ignorant/delusional denial. Young black farmers are only now starting to learn commercial farming techniques from Agri-SA and the like, so they will be woefully unprepared to just take over the process completely and make a good go of farming.
I will add the last - something like this forced land reform is quite possibly in the pipelines. In the Western Cape, Eden area the government was encouraging all farmers to register for water/food aid for the drought. They were only going to give aid to 200 farmers, but they insisted that all farmers in the area register anyway, giving full records and details of their farms and its contents. In retrospect that makes me uneasy now.

As a Scotsman who has been travelling to SA since 1973, I just felt I would like to make a comment on this subject. I know I do not live in your country but feel a great love for it and it's people. I considered moving to SA as it is one of the most beautiful countries I have ever been to, but the security issues worry my wife.
I walked the streets of Cape Town in 1973 and while speaking with a black man in the street I endured lots of abuse from whites as they thought I was one of them not a 17 year old Scotsman who did not understand Apartied. I returned to SA many times between then and the day of the elections in 1994, seeing lots of changes during this time. It was ironic that my flight was due to land in Durban on the day of the elections and I was told to re-schedule as "blood would flow in the streets" but I just felt this would not happen and as you know it didn't. Since that day I have asked some white SA friends, 'was it as bad as you thought it would be' when the blacks got back into power and most admitted it was not. While in Durban some time after, I worked closely with a Zulu guy and as we sat next to each other on a wall at the end of a day, having a Coke and some Bunny Chow we reflected that this probably would not have been possible in years gone by. I have closely followed the SA situation over all of these years, as I feel a great love for your country.
As a very interested outsider looking in, I just hope this land reclamation does not go ahead as you only have to look at Zimbabwe to see how wrong that can go. Changing the 'bread basket of Africa' into a country that no longer exports and can not even look after it's own needs. When the white farmers and their families were chased or even killed so that so called War Veterans could take their farms over, it was the start of the downfall. The blacks that took over these farms had no idea how to run and manage them so they quickly fell into disrepair. As someone said earlier, the white farmers provided housing, work,education and looked after these black families who worked on their farms.
You may say who is this European that has an opinion on the running of our country..........believe me it is only out of love for your country that I felt compelled to write this.
Good luck to SA and I hope Mugabe is not able to influence Zuma to carry out these reclamations of land.

Many farms in SA have been bought by gov and handed to new black owners. Once very productive, 95% of these farms are now unproductive. The same for Zim where they now are looking into the eyes of the West (whites) to save them from their own greed. Every country on this continent in blacj hands are either at war or have gone miserably backwards. We see this now in SA. While the "struggle" is supposedly over the blacks are incites hatred by chanting "kill the boer". This gives fuel to a new breed of racial hatred. The ANC has been ruling since 94 but this country has systematically gone backwards. The blacks have infiltrated gov by means of BEE. Here service delivery has gone backwards and corruption thrives. While all of this is going on the tolerance of whites are being tested to the utmost. The ANC is a cancer spreading in this country, consuming everything in its path. When nothining is left they will too, like Zim say "eish" the West must bail us out. The ANC must be warned that they must be very afraid of the man that has nothing to loose. I have news for you. Yes, you. South Africa is going to succeed.

I’ve come across you several times on the interwebs. You like to brand yourself as the ultimate thinking person and a visionary. The amount of energy you invest in foretelling South Africa’s doom is simply astounding. You gleefully link every article or blog post that decries corruption, lawlessness and mayhem. You rant endlessly about the ANC Youth League, about Zimbabwe and about crime. Your Caps Lock key is permanently in. Your life is going to be so much better in Australia, you roar. It may be easy for you to cynically predict our downfall, then watch things fall apart, but it’s laziness on your part. You’re far more comfortable breaking down than building up. It requires less effort, doesn’t it. To actually get up and try to make a difference is just too much effort. It’s too … plebeian. It is far more intellectually gratifying for you to shoot everyone down from the comfort and safety of your ivory tower. Well, I have news for you, buddy. South Africa is going places.

What about you? You’re a rational, logical and responsible person. You work hard, you pay tax and you bring your children up right. Everyone acknowledges how smart you. You get dinner invitations all the time. Poverty, violent crime, corruption, the scourge of HIV/Aids — you have all the answers. You know what’s best for everyone. So it is utterly unthinkable that there’s someone out there who deigns to oppose your views. Your worldview is the correct one, don’t they know? When Julius Malema talks about nationalising the mines, when Gugile Nkwinti talks about nationalising the land, this is not only a threat to constitutional values of property ownership, it is a threat to your way of life. The reason why these men can talk like this, the underlying causes of all of this don’t matter to you. So it is far easier to imagine that this is just Africa being Africa. I have news for you too. South Africa is going to succeed. Despite the pessimists, despite the naysayers and despite the racists among us.

We live in a difficult time. Our country is undergoing changes that seek to redress and reorder the balance of power in society. It isn’t an easy task by any measure, and the transition is upsetting a lot of people. The fact that those who are supposed to be the guardians of that transition — our government — display worrying traits of corruption and cronyism only makes things worse.

Thank God for people like David Gemmell, who choose to praise the things that are right about South Africa. People like him are everywhere. It is so easy to be pessimistic, but it is the eternal optimists among us who will save this country.

Look at all the good things that have happened over the last 20 years. This country was on the brink of civil war 17 years ago. But we’re about to host the most splendid event the world has to offer. There was no black middle class to speak of in 1994. Today, the euphemistically named black diamonds are numbered in the millions. South Africa’s economy continues to grow, despite the level of unemployment. What has been achieved so far is nothing short of miraculous. That miracle can and will continue.

Success isn’t a zero-sum game. My gain isn’t your loss. The isn’t a finite amount of achievement available. South Africa belongs to all of us. A guaranteed way to for all to succeed is for South Africa to succeed.

Well said Alexander, but it really is sometimes difficult to stay positive, and it is not always easy to get on with people that have not grown up in the same way as me. I am Europen born, but have lived in SA since I was 11y old. My family and I now run a little B&B and Pub in a small town in Mpumalanga, but it is sometimes very hard. I have countless staff problems as they just don't seem to want to learn, they can do somehing right a few times and the very next day they tell me 'I don't know'.. they have no idea about customer service and cleanliness, although I drill it into their heads almost every day that without happy guests we will all be out of a job! Why oh why is it so difficult to teach 'Blacks' anything? And remember, I was not brought up to be a racist and these are not racist comments (In fact, my late father was a member of the ANC before they became a legal party!), but I would appreciate any advice in how to teach my Black staff the value of excellent service and in pleasing the customers and Guests! Even the garden help is useless, they work for you for two or three days, then want an advance or loan already and then don't pitch up for work the next day, and then you discover that thy have stolen things as well! But yet the poor blacks are crying out for jobs, money and food, but I guess it's easier to blame the Whites for their misery and expect hand-outs rather than do the work. Most weeks I work 7 days a week, 11 hous a day, as this is the nature of the business, in this industry we are busy when others are on leave, that's how we make our money, but the staff are not too willing to work on holidays... they would rather work during the week when there is less to do. But yet they want their pay, even if they saw that we had a miserable 1st quarter of the year, they still have the odasity to ask me for a loan, do I look like a bloody bank? I have not even drawn a salary and paid all my bills, but I made sure they got paid! Previously I worked in a factory, same sh!t there, not arriving at work, too babbelas/hung-over to bother, asking for loans, demanding this, demanding that, but at the same time not doing their job properly and losing the company money and clients. I have tried to teach them new things, to help them grow as people, to give them tools and knowledge for their future, but now I am tired, it seems I am wasting my time and energy. Either they are too stupid or they just simply don't want to put any kind of effort into bettering their lives, they would rather have handouts and cry about how hard they have it, and that is a sad reality. Maybe the next generation will be different, but I am not putting my hopes up just yet, as someone pointed out previously, the schooling system is getting worse and worse. When I look at my son's schoolbooks I want to cry, he is in grade 11, but some of the work they are given is so easy that it should be grade 5 work! I got out my old school book the other day, and was amazed at the level of work I was supposed to do when I was in grade 4 or 5... I think schools seriously have to look at a system of having different levels, and then instaed of bringing the level of education down, they should work on taking the 'less capable' students up to the level of the rest or grade them differently!
Anyway, I do hope SA succeeds, it is a beautiful country, and even if we don't all want to be friends with Blacks/Whites/Asians/Chinese etc, we can at least be civil to each other.
BUT... the Government must lead by example, a country is only as good as it's leadership, and unfortunately the leadership in SA (and Zim) leave a lot to be desired! So actually we should all be united in voting for a leadership that is capable, educated and has good morals, only then can we begin to re-build a strong, functioning, non-violent society.
And peeps... don't read more into the Eugene Terre Blanche murder, he was not really a nice man and I reckon his workers just got fed up with him, I doubt there is anything political behind it. Lets hope that tempers cool down and the AWB doesn't do something they will regret.

Was there a wage dispute between the workers and Ugene Terblanche – not at all? Julius Malema finds himself somewhat isolated from the main stream political views of the majority within the ANC. His political reforms are somewhat radical from the ruling party’s plans for the country.

In order to gain support for his reform, Malema started by starting a new liberation struggle, sinning songs like kill the “Boer kill the farmer”. Malema needs a new focus on his radical reforms by utilizing the age old race issue in South Africa for his political reforms in the country.

The death on the extreme right wing leader was an intended action, hoping for retaliation by the white extremist group in the country to fuel race tension in South Africa. This sort of action is what Malema is hoping for, as we know an injury to one is an injury to all especially where it is white on Black violence.

His plan is to use this support if it comes his way to press the ANC into radical land reform and nationalization of mines, businesses and banks in South Africa. Any political leader with political aspiration usually does the opposite of what Malema does, all his actions are radical and seek the support of other radical leaders, including those who find themselves in problematic situation like we saw in the athletics SA and ESKOM – where Malema used the race card to defend those who were incompetent or hiding behind lies pointed out in the media – who is suppose to be owned by the whites. By using this he wants to portray the role of savior, against the evil white owned media, business in South Africa.

Dave Steward on the minister's dangerous new land reform proposals


NEW LAND REFORM PROPOSALS MIGHT POSE A SERIOUS THREAT TO PROPERTY RIGHTS

The land reform proposals that were outlined in parliament last week by Minister Gugile Nkwinti, the Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform have their origin in the ANC's National Democratic Revolution which calls, among other things, for "the elimination of apartheid property relations" including "the de-racialisation of ownership and control of wealth, including land".

The ANC's 52nd National Conference at Polokwane in December 2007 called for far-reaching land reform in a resolution that was highly critical of organized agriculture. It asked the government to abandon "market-driven land reform"; to review "the principle of willing-seller, willing-buyer" and to align all legislation relating to expropriation with the Constitution. It also demanded the removal of "all institutional, legislative, regulatory and tax-related policies that create a bias in favour of large-scale, capital intensive, environmentally damaging agriculture" as well as the introduction of "a special land tax and other progressive tax measures with the aim of creating incentives for the disposal of under-utilised land and the deconcentration of land ownership."

The latest proposals, which will be published in a Green Paper at the end of April, will apparently make provision for a three-tiered land tenure system comprising state land, private land and foreign-owned land. Land is to be categorized according to its use at the level of household, small holder and commercial farming. The new system will change the present ownership of private land to "freehold with limited extent" - implying that limits might be imposed on the number or the size of properties an individual may own.

The limitation on foreign ownership of land is even more ominous and is described as "precarious tenure linked to productivity and partnership models with South African citizens." In other words, foreigners will be permitted to retain part of their interest if it suits the government and if they take on local partners. In an e-TV interview on 29 March Minister Nkwinti said that he did not think that this would discourage foreign investment, since all that foreign investors required was "certainty" about government policy.

It was also clear, from the same interview, that large farms will be a major target of the new initiative. The Minister insisted that the government should break up these ‘monopolies' even though large farms, which comprise 10% of the total, produce 80% of South Africa's food. When asked whether this would not jeopardize food security the Minister replied that these farms had not always been productive and that with the right support small black farmers could be equally successful. It would be important for white farmers to co-operate with the implementation of the new proposals to help prevent an even worse outcome than Zimbabwe.

All this was based on the novel concept that, because sovereignty is defined by land, the state actually has a claim on all land in the country. (Does this mean that all those countries that recognize unrestricted freehold property rights are somehow less sovereign?) Minister Nkwinti has nevertheless denied that this is an attempt to ‘nationalise' land and has stated that he is not contemplating a constitutional amendment.

It is, nevertheless, difficult to see how these provisions could be introduced without amending section 25 of the Constitution. The proposed limitation of freehold in respect of privately owned land would require payment of fair compensation to the extent of the reduction in the value of the property Where would the state find sufficient funds to pay compensation in a system that might affect the rights of all private property owners and seriously limit the rights of foreign property owners?

In keeping with NDR doctrine, the Minister states that "All anti-colonial struggles are at the core about two things, repossession of lost land and restoring the centrality of indigenous culture....Fundamental land reforms were therefore a key catalyst in the ANC's mission to resolve inherited race and class contradictions".

Minister Nkwinti is mistaken: the struggle was not primarily about land and race, but about the establishment of a non-racial constitutional democracy based on equality, human dignity and freedom. The outcome was the adoption of the 1993 and 1996 constitutions which represented a victory for all South Africans from all our communities. The new Constitution makes ample provision for balanced land restitution and land reform while at the same time protecting the property rights of all South Africans. The fact that the government has thus far achieved such little success with its land reform initiatives may be ascribed to a large extent to its own failures and - as he admits - to the incapacity of Minister Nkwinti's own department.

The Constitution most certainly does not countenance the ‘centrality' of any single culture but proclaims unambiguously the equality of all South Africans and of all our cultures. There should be no mistake about the Minister Nkwinti's approach: what he is proposing is an assault on the property rights of sections of the population on the basis of their race and nationality. It is a frontal attack on our historic constitutional accord. Section 25 was one of the core compromises on which acceptance of the new Constitution depended. If the requirement for fair compensation for expropriated property is diluted or abandoned, the national consensus that made the constitution and the new South Africa possible, will be seriously eroded.

The Minister has committed himself to engaging rigorously with all South Africans so as to emerge with a tenure system that will satisfy the aspirations of all South Africans. We urgently need such a system, but we simply cannot afford to embark on a reform process that does not guarantee full and secure property ownership and that does not address the stark economic realities of the world in which we live.

We must await the Green Paper before we can assess the full implications of the proposed land policy. However, Minister Nkwinti's statements thus far already provide ample grounds for serious concern.

Nationalising land and wealt and taking something that is rightfully not yours is another, just because things take to long for your liking does not mean you can take it. Follow procedures and everyone is happy, taking something will coase friction. If you are a Black person and a white man comes inside your house with belingings which you worked hard to buy and tell you it is his now because of nationalising what would you do, Fight? But if the right precedures is followed and negotiations things can get to an acord and both parties is happy. But then again the ball is in the government's hands. There is space for all of us, just start getting along, is that too much to ask?

People, please remember, racist extremists are always in the minority. We are a new generation and not part of whatever happened in the past. We should all focus on making this beautiful country of ours (all races), even more beautiful. Currently, we are an example to most countries. The Rand is becoming stronger, the 2010 world cup is around the corner and we can all flourish. we, as individuals should stand up and stand together against the criminal element. Most of us sometimes buy fake DVD's or buy branded clothing on the street corners, turning a blind eye. This is where it all starts - stop supporting all these illegal vendors! If there is no demand, there will be no supply. Don't get involved in negative conversation - be positive and influance others around you with a positive aditude!

As someone who has lost a parent to murder in SA, I'd like to say my bit here. I do not and have not ever blamed black people as a whole for my fathers murder, nor have I become a racist over it. You cannot seek revenge on a whole race or nation because of the opinions and actions of a group or individual, unless that WHOLE race or nation shares the same view, which is not the case, it never ever is in any of the conflicts in the world. Yet innocent people continue to die all around the world.

In the case of SA, land distribution, and seizing of the mines is NOT an issue of color, but an issue of WEALTH...not for the masses but for the FEW. The sooner people realize this the quicker we can move forward together. The enemy is not in SA, and it is not black nor is it white, it is much larger and complex than that. No political party, not the ANC, not ZANU PF or MDC, not even the Democratic Party in the US, or any other political party in the world for that matter cares about its people. They are only interested in peoples votes for their own wealth and power. This power and wealth (not money, but natural resources...money is not wealth, its merely printed paper) can only be achieved with two equally important elements:

1. Funding - Well this ones easy. These large global criminal elements have been around for centuries. They have had a hand in all conflicts globally for centuries. To them, the world has no boundaries. Its like a chess board, and they have more money than you and I can every dream of. Money is no object, money is not what they are after.

2. Instability of the nation - This ones the tricky part, but this is where money comes in because EVERYONE can be bought. The reason they need instability is quite simple. Keep the locals fighting amongst each other while we rape their land of its resources. Used to great effect time and time again in history. This is where the politicians do their bit, all bought and paid for ofcoarse. And in the case of Africa, the most powerful tool that politicians use to create instability is?? Yep...the "Race Card". Divide and conquer is the name of the game. It is in their best interest to create instability, remember that! Africa is rich in natural resources (as is the middle east) so there is a constant fight for power there and here. I believe we are in historic times now where a shift in the balance of power from the criminal elements in the west to the criminal elements in the east is happening. Ie from Jews and Europeans to Asians. Africans are just tools in all of this I'm afraid, so all of you who think these wars and conflict are empowering Africans, you are very sadly mistaken. Your masters are merely changing. You need a great deal of wealth and resources to pull off large campaigns, such as the ones going on in Zimbabwe, Angola, and many other countries in Africa. Africans are definitely involved, but they are much much lower down in the food chain and stand to gain only short. The elite do NOT share!

In any case, there is absolutely NOTHING NEW going on here, and no different from whats going on in the rest of the world either, and throughout history for that matter. In fact if this is news to you, you need to get educated, and fast!

Now the only reason why it is so "in your face" in Africa, is simply because it is much, much easier to influence public opinion here. This is due to the fact that most Africans are uneducated who do not understand politics and so the tactics to influence public opinion is soooo much more simple, in your face, and primitive. Quite frankly in Africa this type of propaganda works, and it works well! But only in Africa. These large criminal elements do the same in the rest of the world too, however due to the rest of the world having a larger educated population they do it in a much smarter and tactful way (mainly through schools and media - TV, newspapers, magazines, movies and such) where its not so much in your face. Majority of rural Africans don't read newspapers, watch (or even own) a TV, so ambush style propaganda, and speaking to the masses like Julius Malema does is the best and only way to achieve this. To the educated he is a fool, but to the uneducated he is a hero and saviour. Do not underestimate his power and influence! The methods are different but the agenda is the same.

So going back to SA there is only 2 ways to resolve the conflict here:
1. Rightly educating the MASSES, a small handful will not do any good at all because you need the majority see through the hidden agendas of these global criminal elements. This will empower the masses to form their own educated opinions about the real problems this country is facing and how best to solve them TOGETHER as a people. This will take years however, possibly decades to achieve.
2. A good old fashioned civil war, nothing new with this method either, in fact it is an easier and much quicker method. This will flush out the people who are too blind to see the men behind the curtain. No other options really. Now it is clear to me that there is quite a large group of these blind people in south africa already (quite possibly a majority) who are too uneducated/ stubborn/ old/ greedy/ not interested/ impatient/ (pick whichever one you want) to go through the long education and negotiation process in option 1 and want to see results right now. They are buying into the propaganda and are looking for a war...so I say lets have it. But please lets have it now so we can have it over and done with. Lets not drag this on for another 16 more years. Once the blood is shed, the smoke has cleared, and the dead of both sides of the conflict are buried, the rest of the people can begin the process or rebuilding the nation through proper education and negotiation and without the influences of the global criminal elements which screwed this country up in the first place. We do not need them if we work together as a people. This CAN be done! Africa is largely still untouched and can become an example to the rest of the world on how to live freely from the shackles of the criminal elements that have had their dirty hands in conflicts throughout Europe dating back centuries. Time for a revolution. Currently, the masses in this country cant see that they are playing right into the hands of the few people at the top who dont give a sh*t about them...and sadly I dont think they will ever see it. They need to either be educated or flushed out. There are forces at work in this country that are threatening on a daily basis to destabilize the entire nation. Its time for the rest of us who want a peaceful and democratic society to stand up and say enough is enough. We will not stand for this anymore. Mugabe and Malema are tools, so is every other politician for the matter. Its time for the people of this great nation, and I mean ALL the People of SA, to stand up together and fight for the future of this country, and for your children's future, just like our forefathers unselfishly did for us century after century. @chris, you mentioned earlier that the Black South African's had Fighter Jets and Tanks. I am in the SAAF as a Instructor Pilot on the Gripen Jet. I have 17329 Hours on Fighter Jets. Unfortunately, we do not have competent pilots that can even pose a threat to Zimbabwe, let alone a bunch of people threatening on the ground. Ground targets are difficult to attack as if the individuals breakup it's a waste of a missile or what ever you want to deploy.

Zimbabwe's aircraft arsenal includes an estimated six MiG23s, 18 F7s (Chinese equivalent of the MiG21) and 12 Nanchang K8 fighter jet trainers and six 6 MI35 Russian attack helicopters. If we were told to intervene in Zimbabwe we would not be able to do anything because the Zimbabwe air force, which is very competent, has aircraft that can shoot down transport aircraft and carry out ground attacks, We cannot shoot down aircraft or protect our ground forces and if you cannot dominate the air you cannot operate.
The the cash crisis had led to the disappearance of the country's fighter cover and the shortage of personnel. The SAAF cannot pay the pilots and ground crew properly or fly their aircraft properly.

It is very easy to get hold of Anti-Aircraft Missiles on the "Black Market" at a very cheap price, just about anything can be bought on the "Black Market" What you should consider in your statement that nobody would come and help the "Whites" if a war broke out; Russia is no longer a communist state, they will definitely come and assist the "Whites" should any war begin, they are so desperate to get back into battle but definitely not with an African country. i think you're forgetting one other possible person in ur short example - WHITE WOMAN.. look at most corporate companies even today and whites are still in more executive positions than any other race group. only this time, instead of them shopping or in the hair salons, as was the case during the apartheid years, they are now in the boardrooms, and their white husbands are not. So dont give chris the wrong example here. white women are still classified as disadvantaged so are still sitting at the top of the food chain. most of your generation of whites are still as racist as your forefathers.only difference now, is that you hide behind the fact that you werent old enough to experience apartheid. how many black, colored or indian close friends do you have? i'm sure you dont have any or if you do, then its really just as a pretense. this country has a long way to go before racism will be completely eradicated. 16years is nothing.

If you travel Africa you will see poverty all over. Yet many countries prosper...

Take Zambia, Namibia and Botswana, to name a few. They PROSPER. What is the attitude between black and white? It is GOOD. Go and see for yourself. There is TOLERANCE, PATIENCE, RESPECT, CO-OPERATION, ALL the attributes to make a country prosper, in all those countries. And a black government in charge. And all those governments respect and protect the rights and lives of ALL its citizens.

Once you lose those attributes and resort to anarchy and land reforms and what Mugabe did, people starve. People die. We have all we need in this country. But we need tolerance and RESPECT. I do not care who has the brains and who has the muscle. We can and will prosper if we display and practise RESPECT.

Lets all push and ask for a government to bind our people and work towards a solution. And practise respect. And that includes ALL races.

I've been reading a blog on the BBC's website about the Terreblanche murder and followed a link to this site. I must say after reading a lot of these posts I despair of humankind. Having read all the comments it took this last one to bring my mixed feelings of anger , despair, disgust and above all sadness back down to earth. You have managed to say it all.

I cannot claim to be an expert but have some experience of South Africa and of Africa as a whole. I am white , english and lived and worked for two years (1974/5/6) as a farm sales rep travelling throughout Natal ,Zululand and occasionally into Swaziland . I thus met many white farmers and their black employees during the apartheid period and saw the ridiculous system at first hand. Believe it or not I had a number of small black farmer clients, miners working in Joburg who would invest their savingsin farm machinery on smallholdings in Zululand. Imagine going into the local pub and wanting to buy a drink for a black or coloured acquaintance but having to send it through to the separate 'coloured only' bar.
In later years I visited Zimbabwe many times on business as well as Mozambique, Angola, Malawi, Zambia, and several other 'african' countries. I am now retired and have only very real fond memories of all the people both black, white, coloured , indian etc with whom I shared many unforgettable moments out in the 'real' african countryside.

The lower class Black S/Africans still have a lot to learn, and as an educated person this can be extremely frustrating, as we take a lot for granted. I wish that you and other people of different race and cultures will start to realize that not all whites are hatefull racists and that some of us just wants peace and has nothing to do with apartheid. If everyone has to start killing for what other people's forefathers did don't you think there would be no people left in this beautiful country of ours? Interesting that the White man brought Christianity to Africa. The Bible is such an interesting book, because it teaches us how to live a morally upright life, preaches values such as forgiveness, equality, respect, love for your neighbours, compassion, mercy, giving, and a whole lot of values that makes us civil.

For me the starting point is to define the goals......What do we all want for this country .....for our children and the next generations. If we are clear and in agreement with those goals, then the next step is to assess our present situation and identify those positives that will move us closer to the goals and equally the obstacles. If corruption is an obstacle surely its in everyone's interest to rid society of it, equally if a well planned land reform program is necessary then all should embrace it. It does not help anyone, and certainly not the writer to throw tantrums like kindergaten kids, because quite frankly it doesnt change anything, other than give one a few red marks on the face!

And finally we need to define the road map towards the goals, and the milestones we need to achieve to realise those goals. A very simple Socio-political and economic development strategy. (Finally I can put my MBA lessons to good use for the betterment of all and free lessons to some misguided missles amongs our midst)

You know, reading all these comments fills me with sadness. I am a young, white, south african male. I was born in 1980 when apartheid was still in full swing, but it ended in 1994, officially...when i was 14... whether i wanted to take part in it or not ( I would not have wanted to) I was too young to vote. What saddens me is that we really are still such a splintered, fractured nation. We do not know each other. We tolerate each other as best we can in our day to day lives, but we do not have a deep bond between races. Unfortunately it takes major events such as the world cup to unite us. Why can we not choose to have a united frame of mind perpetually - without the world cup as a catalyst? You can call me shmuck, but why is it that we as humans can choose to adopt animals like dogs and cats, feed them, love them as if they are part of the family, and they do truly become part of the family... but as humans (black and white) we cannot even extend that decency to other human beings? If you can love an animal that does not even belong to the same species as you, why not to another human? For good or for bad, south africa a s a whole needs to come to a radical decision and once again we need to change, It has now been 16 years of freedom and things have only changed on the surface. War will be inevatable if we cannot settle our differences amongst our races. We need to decide what we are going to do. What is the point of a half hearted reconcilliation from both sides? why even bother and waste time? It is either 100% for peace or 100% for war, no compromise, no middle ground. But let us rather choose peace so that we can focus on more pressing issues, e.g. global warming...

south africa is a clear case of missed opportunities. had the blacks and the whites been in truely adult relationships since 1652, south africa would have been hong kong, canada, malaysia, switzerland, and taiwan all rolled into one of africa today with its location, banks, diversity, and natural resources. it should have woken up in 1884, not 1994, when the british empire imposed the borders in the berlin conference of 1884. it should have realized right then and there that it needed radical changes its policies in the face of the poor reaction to the borders that made the british empire win the ballroom, just as the unequal treaties were to East Asia after the opuim wars of the 1830s-1840s. had the whites been excellent partners with the blacks throughout, the south africans would have made very quick work of the borders and the country would have been probably bigger than it is now and certainly would have evolved into a hong kong/switzerland with 1884 borders.

Mugabe was voted out a year ago and is still ruling, that`s what yu call democracy, that how the whole of Africa works. Without whites that will be the fate of RSA. Millions of people getting murdered and starving from hunger, but that seams to be the norm in Africa.

We have some very clever and intellectual people here. I am glad this is the case because the end product of this application is easy to understand.

I will spell this out for all of you –

We only have two options in South Africa

Option 1

We live together in peace, tolerate each other, work together to build this country. We fight crime and reap the rewards of our hard work.

We stop our threats, polarization, farm attacks and senseless murders including xenophobic violence. This is in my opinion to much asked in any case.

Option 2

Things go ahead as right now or get even worse. Continue to attack farmers, people of this land, foreigners. Hurt the economy and take away the land from the white people. Continue to talk war and who has the jets, tanks and army.

None of that matters, if you think it does – YOU ARE AN IDIOT!

The end result of option 2 is nothing good for no one. War will destroy this country. It will destroy you and me. Listen to me know. Look at Africa!

I am a racist, just like you. Stop branding this word politically. I love my people just like you love your people. I love my history and stand by it, you’re people were part of it. You should accept your history and the fact that we are part of it.

Now we can blame each other till we are blue in the face of who came here and when. Fact of the matter is the following –

We can tolerate each other and move forward

If we go option 2, it is not going to be nice. Nothing will ever be the same. There will be no stop and the rest of Africa will look like a kinder garden to what will happen here.

I can not speak for all the white people, not at all for black people but am sure the feeling is a lot the same.

We are not scared of the fact that you have jets, tanks, guns, uniforms and what ever you apeace yourself with. We have ability and will. Just push us far enough.

If you test us, we will unleash it and it will not be good for anyone. Not for us either. We are patient and we have tolerated everything pushed out in front of us.

Let this be clear – do what you want to do! Continue the way you do!

You are right....there are some clever and intellectual people here....in fact more cleverer than you think....maybe more cleverer than you also.

You go on and on telling us what you think are facts.....and hoping that you are driving some sense into people's minds by pretending to be a level headed person who is for the good of this country. Well I can read between the lines, your lack of respect and appreciation of the black person and your weird assumptions that we can be sucked into your rhetoric.

Dont dare tell us (blacks) that we should let things as they are or risk white retaliation because quite frankly that argument does not hold. 200 years ago whites defeated the blacks not because of some inner will-power you seem to believe in but purely because of superior artillery....certainly not the case today. Everyone can access the same ammunition and war will ultimately bog down to a numbers game, and guess who has the upper hand on that.

Having said that I am not wanting to start a war, but if whites are not willing to share and give up, then war is inevitable. So the solution is not to just let things as they are, (status quo), but rather to ensure that there are some positive changes that result in more black participation in the economy. If you choose to ignore that point then you are very stupid, because you are going to loose everything. What good is a good economy to me, (black) if I dont enjoy it.
