The Countryman is the first four-door MINI

A striking, fourth new MINI – the four-wheel-drive Countryman – joined the family line-up this week. Countryman 4x4 'crossover' to go on sale in September.
The first MINI to have four doors, it also has a slightly raised seating position, more space inside, greater ground clearance, a new rear hatch and more attitude, transforming the vehicle into what the firm claims is a "genuine crossover".
On sale in the UK from September, the Countryman is claimed to retain the keen driving experience of its three-door, cabriolet and Clubman estate siblings, along with now traditional MINI characteristics such as short overhangs, a high window line and a powerful stance. The Countryman has a steeper, deeper frontal treatment than the existing three cars, including a new radiator grille with hexagonal detailing and larger headlights, bigger wheelarches and redesigned rear lights.
MINI says the newcomer has much more space inside, enabling it to fit what it calls a Centre Rail extending from front to rear instead of a conventional centre console, with options for specially-tailored storage boxes, cup holders, phone holders and cubbyholes for MP3 players.
The Countryman comes with four seats as standard, but a three-seat rear bench will be a no-cost option.
MINI has not yet confirmed prices or which engines will be available, although in mainland Europe options will range from a 90hp diesel to a 184hp 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. Options are likely to include Brake Energy Regeneration, Auto Start Stop and a gearshift point indicator.
As an alternative to the standard-issue six-speed manual gearbox, buyers will be able to choose an optional six-speed automatic transmission.
Under normal driving conditions the optional four-wheel drive system will send 50 per cent of the engine's power to the rear wheels, rising to 100 per cent depending on conditions.
Other options will include sports suspension, alloy wheels up to 19 inches in diameter, a panoramic glass roof, adaptive headlights and a towbar.
