The Zambian government has started implementing a clause in its amended constitution which allows dual citizenship and has since asked people who ceased to be Zambian citizens as a result of acquiring citizenship of another country to start registering, a senior official said on Tuesday.

The dual citizenship clause was included in the country’s amended constitution which PresidentEdgar Lungu assented to in January last year.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Sylvester Mundanda says the government will now register within six months a person who ceased to be a citizen of Zambia after acquiring the citizenship of another country under the previous constitution.

The official said the Citizenship Board of Zambiahas started getting applications from people who wanted to get citizenship and that a circular has since been sent to all Zambia embassies abroad.
