Prominent British boxing promoter calls for Anthony Joshua investigated over ‘racist tweet’ backing Mugabe

LONDON – British boxing promoter Frank Warren who also managed Zimbabwean British boxer Derek Chisora believes controversy surrounding Anthony Joshua’s social media posts has been largely ignored since hitting the headlines last week.

Heavyweight Eddie Chambers firstly revealed questionable messages from Joshua’s official Instagram account before the Briton apparently snapped about Zimbabwean dictator Robert Mugabe more than once.Joshua’s representative Eddie Hearn is yet to address any of the racial elements since the posts came to light and Warren says it would be a completely different story if Tyson Fury or Billy Joe Saunders had been involved in such a mess.

Most of the UK tabloids and broadsheets have also decided Joshua’s social activity isn’t newsworthy leading even Fury himself to question whether there’s been a media lockdown.

In his Daily Star column, Warred said: “Anthony Joshua’s Instagram account has been a point of controversy this week.

“The WBA and IBF heavyweight champion’s team say he was hacked after his official account sent abusive messages to former fighter Eddie Chambers.

“One of the messages included the phrase “disgrace to the superior black race”.

“What has surprised me is how quickly – even though he says he was hacked – it has been brushed under the carpet. If Tyson Fury or Billy Joe Saunders were caught up in something like this, can you imagine the public outcry for an investigation?”

On the possibility of the UK board taking things further, Warren added:

“It will be interesting to see if the British Boxing Board of Control investigates it further.”

‘AJ’ is currently on holiday in Dubai, but has spoken to the media since the messages began – only to speak about a potential unification with Joseph Parker.

In the meantime, Joshua’s subsequent social media efforts are being hit with a barrage of replies featuring the word ‘superior’ accompanying them. – World Boxing News
