FORMER Reading FC Academy star Trevor Mutero was on target as Highmoor Ibis defeated Fleet Spurs 2-1 in a friendly at the Rivermoor Stadium on Saturday, writes Dave Wright.

The former Zimbabwe Under-21 and 23 international scored from the penalty spot.

Jamie Connor, with a superb effort from outside the area, had earlier opened Highmoor’s account, with substitute Adam Nash replying for the visitors, all three goals coming in the second half.

Combined Counties League club Fleet had come to Highmoor’s rescue late last week after scheduled opponents, Maidenhead United, had pulled out just days after confirming the fixture.

The Highmoor team fielded by Marcus Richardson was only a shadow of last season’s, with the manager admitting: “We have lost a lot of players.”

Most have gone to fellow Hellenic League clubs with Harry Grant, Anthony White and Lamin Sanko joining former Highmoor skipper Harrison Bayley at Thatcham Town, Joe Grant signing for Binfield with brother Alfie to Wantage.

“Finding players of a good standard to replace them won’t be easy, but I am talking to a lot of players this week,” said Richardson, who boasts one of the best contact books in local football.

“Hopefully, I will be able to start the season with a competitive squad.”
