Three members of the “Tobva Tadii Paya” gang were granted US$100 bail by High Court judge Justice Clement Phiri.

The quartet shot to notoriety after a video of them narrating how they sexually assaulted girls believed to be commercial sex workers went viral.

The three who were granted bail are Prince Chirombo (18), Rombo Chirara (18) and Admire Chirongoma (18). The fourth member of the gang Thabani Gazi (20) is yet to apply for bail. The matter was remanded to the 25th of January and will be heard at the Chinhoyi Regional Court.

They are facing charges of rape and robbery after they allegedly, entered a girls’ room at Mungwanya Compound in Battlefields armed with machetes, knives and empty beer bottles. They then ordered one of the girls’ clients to hide behind a curtain in the room before they attacked the girls and gang-raped them. The four used protection during the sexual encounters.

The gang has denied all rape charges. Instead, the four alleged rapists have claimed that they made the confessions under duress after they were severely assaulted by members of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA).
