Harare - Controversial Zanu PF businessman Philip Chiyangwa has extended his interests to football and is backing Lesley Gwindi's bid for the ZIFA Presidency.

Sources revealed that Chiyangwa has extended his financial support for the Gwindi campaign through Nigel Munyati an employee of the flashy businessman's Native Investments, who will be Gwindi's running mate.

Munyati, a former Black Aces player and director of the Aces Youth Academy, will be contesting the ZIFA first Vice President's post in the long awaited March ZIFA board elections.

Although Chiyangwa could not be reached to shed light on this development, Gwindi confirmed that Munyati would be his running mate and did not deny the fact that the two had Chiyangwa's financial backing in their bid.

"I am contesting the ZIFA president's post. That is not a secret. Where I am getting or where I get my money is nobody's business because I don't ask people where they get their money," said Gwindi when contacted for comment by Radio VOP.

Chiyangwa, a former boxing and music promoter, has been associated with football for some time and is at the moment the sole agent for the sale of 2010 World Cup tickets in Zimbabwe.

Last year, he was linked with a takeover of Eastern Lions and was also associated with CAPS United after being seen at a number of the club's matches.

Gwindi, a former Dynamos and Premier Soccer League secretary general, is one of the many people who have made clear their intentions of wrestling the ZIFA presidency from Wellington Nyatanga. The others going for the biggest job in Zimbabwean football are Tapuwa Matangaidze, Chris Sambo, Francis Zimunya, Cuthbert Dube, and Nyatanga himself.

The ZIFA polls will be held on March 22 and Zifa honorary member Cornelius Bwanya will be the returning officer.

The ZANU PF adherent and Local Government Minister, Ignatious Chombo's sidekick at the City of Harare, Leslie Gwindi, is "slowly dying of Aids", his wife told a civil court last year.

During proceedings in a maintenance case, Gwindi's wife, Tendai, surprised people packed in the court room when she said she wanted Gwindi to increase the money he was providing for mantainance to cater for the diet of their child, who is also sick.

"Due to AIDS, the child needs a special diet and Gwindi knows of the disease affecting our child. He too is dying slowly," Tendai said.

She added that she had passed on the deadly disease to their child after contracting it from Gwindi, whom she said was a womaniser.
