Grace Jones steals the show at the Q Awards

LONDON - Singer Grace Jones has been honoured with a music industry award and has lived up to her eccentric reputation with a suitably bizarre outfit.

The 59-year-old star wore a hooded cloak and black eye-mask, complete with horns, as she accepted Q magazine's Idol Award.

Jones has had a string of chart hits and appeared as a Bond girl in A View To A Kill.

She was one of several veteran performers honoured at the Q Awards, held at London's Grosvenor House.

The singer Meatloaf accepted the Classic Song Award for 1979 single Bat Out Of Hell but sparked renewed health fears when he gave a rambling speech and appeared unsteady on his feet, requiring help to leave the stage.

The 57-year-old has suffered a string of scares in recent years, including heart problems. A spokesman blamed his latest condition on "vertigo".

Other winners included David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, who received the award for Outstanding Contribution to Music and dedicated it to his late bandmate Richard Wright, who died from cancer last month.

Gilmour said he would never perform certain Pink Floyd songs again because Wright was such a great part of them. "There's all sorts of music that I will not be able to play again without him, which is a source of sadness for me."

In an emotional tribute, Gilmour hailed Wright as the unsung hero of the band. "You could say that he worked in the position of second fiddle, or slightly behind some of the pushier chaps up the front. But his work was vitally important to our entire career."

Gilmour also disclosed that one of Wright's last wishes was for the pair to play together at the Glastonbury festival. "We weren't able to do that, which is also a sadness," he said.

Other winners included Coldplay, who were named Best Act In The World Today and received the Best Album Award for Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends. The Telegraph
